A Very Good Quality George III Period Mahogany Tea Caddy, Of Rectangular Form, Having Attractive Fan Inlaid Decoration And Brass Swan Neck Handle To Hinged Lid Enclosing Lidded Interior.

This attractive mahogany tea caddy, which dates to the sheraton period at end of the 18th century, remains in excellent condition and has clearly been well looked after over the years. The inlaid decoration is an excellent feature and really adds to the item, along with the choice of well figured mahogany veneers. There is a possibility that the brass swan neck handle, despite being 18th century, is not original to the tea caddy, athough it must be said that it sits very well on it and looks particularly nice.

Tea was a precious commodity throughout the 18th and 19th centuries and the purpose of a tea caddy was not just to preserve the and extend the life of the precious tea leaves, but also to enable the owner to lock away those aforementioned valuable tea leaves, keeping them safe from the house staffs potential wandering hands.
