A Superb Quality Late 18th Century George III Period Mahogany Octagonal Hall Centre Table, Or Breakfast Table, Having Wonderfully Figured Octagonal Tilting Top, With Attractive Satinwood And Purpleheart Crossbanded Decoration, Raised On Very Elegant Gun Barrel Turned Central Column And Three Umbrella Type Splayed Tripod Legs With Original Brass Box Castors.

Dating from the latter part of the 18th century, this is an extremely elegant and particularly good quality example of its type. The wonderfully figured mahogany top is a really great feature, with the unusual octagonal shape further enhanced by contrasting satinwood and purpleheart crossbanding, creating just the right amount of decorative interest without becoming overly elaborate.

The tilting mechanism allows the top to be raised vertically when required, as was originally intended to save space when the table was not in use, whilst the generous proportions make it equally practical today as a breakfast table, occasional dining table, or perhaps most impressively as a centre table in an entrance hall.

The gun barrel turned central column is particularly well proportioned and leads down to three wonderfully swept, umbrella shaped tripod legs which retain their original brass box castors, giving the table a particularly light, graceful appearance.

Constructed from extremely good quality mahogany throughout, the table retains a good colour and surface, with the inevitable old marks, stains, scuffs and imperfections which one would expect from well over 200 years of use, all adding considerably to its charm and character.

A particularly attractive, useful and highly decorative late 18th century table, with the combination of its unusual octagonal form, beautifully figured timbers and elegant base making it considerably more interesting than the more commonly encountered circular and rectangular examples.

As with all our items this table has been attended to in our workshops by our highly skilled and trained traditional antique furniture restorers and received a natural wax polish before being offered for sale. It is therefore ready to place straight into the home.
