A Charming Early 19th Century George III Period Mahogany Occasional Lamp Table, Or Bedside Cupboard, Having Well Figured Oval Top Retaining Rich Colour And Surface, Above Single Cupboard Door With Ebonised Stringing Decoration And Old Brass Knob, Raised On Elegant Turned Legs, United By Cross Stretcher, Terminating On Bulbous Turned Feet.

Dating from the early part of the 19th century, this is a particularly charming and somewhat quirky little table, of an unusual form which we certainly don’t come across very often.

Constructed from good quality mahogany throughout, it retains a lovely rich colour and surface, with the well figured oval top displaying plenty of natural character and the inevitable old marks, stains, scuffs and imperfections acquired through over 200 years of use.

The cupboard below is particularly useful and is enclosed by a single door, attractively decorated with ebonised stringing and retaining an old brass knob. The whole is raised on four elegant turned legs, united by a particularly attractive and unusual cross stretcher, before terminating on bulbous turned feet.

It is however the slightly unusual combination of an oval table top with the cupboard below which gives this piece so much of its quirky charm. It is difficult to put it into one particular category and that is probably one of its greatest attractions. Clearly it would make a wonderful bedside cupboard, offering both a useful surface alongside the bed and concealed storage below, but equally it would work extremely well as an occasional or lamp table alongside a sofa or armchair.

Its relatively small proportions also make it extremely easy to accommodate around the modern home and, unlike many pieces designed specifically as bedside furniture, there is nothing about its appearance which restricts it to the bedroom.

A really charming and unusual little table, with plenty of character and individuality, combining good quality Regency period cabinet making with wonderfully practical proportions and a particularly quirky form.

As with all our items this table has been attended to in our workshops by our highly skilled and trained traditional antique furniture restorers and received a natural wax polish before being offered for sale. It is therefore ready to place straight into the home.
