A Charming Early 18th Century George I Period Oak Close Stool, Or Bedside Night Table, Retaining Exceptionally Rich Colour And Patina Throughout, With Moulded Edge To Hinged Lid Enclosing Storage Compartment And False Drawer Fronts Retaining Original Brass Handles To Front And Sides, Raised On Original Shaped Bracket Feet.

Few forms of early domestic furniture have survived in such limited numbers as the traditional close stool. Built as practical household necessities during the late 17th and early 18th centuries, many were altered, discarded or simply worn out following the introduction of indoor plumbing. Consequently, genuine surviving examples are now increasingly sought after, admired not only for their rarity and originality, but also for the wonderfully practical role they can fulfil within the modern home as bedside cupboards, lamp tables or occasional cabinets.

This particular example is an especially appealing one, constructed in beautifully figured solid oak which has mellowed over more than three centuries to a wonderfully rich colour and patina. It retains not only its original brass drop handles to the false drawer fronts, but also its original brass carrying handles to each side, together with its original bracket feet, all combining to create an exceptionally original and highly decorative piece of early Georgian furniture.

As with all items which we offer for sale, this piece has been inspected and attended to within our workshops by our highly skilled antique furniture restorers. It has received a natural wax polish and is therefore presented in excellent condition, ready for immediate placement within the home following purchase.
