An Extremely Good Quality & Very Attractive 19th Century Oriental Hardwood Circular Coffee Table, Having Superbly Figured Timber To Panelled Top, Over Convex Projecting Frieze With Carved Scrolling Decoration, Raised On Five Bold Scrolling Cabriole Legs United By Wavy Cross Stretcher.

Dating from the 19th century, this extremely attractive Oriental hardwood table is a particularly good quality and decorative example of its type, with the low circular proportions, bold scrolling design and wonderful selection of timbers giving it a great deal of character.

The circular top is particularly attractive, having a superbly figured central panel surrounded by a broad segmented border, with the differing direction and figuring of the grain creating plenty of natural interest.

Below is a substantial frieze, decorated throughout with elegant raised scrolling motifs and shaped panels. This is supported on five particularly bold cabriole legs, each sweeping underneath the table before terminating in tightly scrolled feet and united by a strong wavy stretcher.

Furniture of this general type was produced in China specifically for the Western market from the early part of the 19th century and beyond, and is now commonly referred to as Chinese Export furniture. It was produced in a wide variety of forms and surviving examples vary considerably in both quality and complexity. This particular table is certainly towards the more decorative end of the scale, with considerably more attention having been paid to the selection of timber, construction and carved detail than one often finds.

The proportions lend themselves perfectly to use as a coffee table in the modern home. The generous circular top provides plenty of useful surface area, whilst the relatively low height and open base prevent it from appearing overly imposing and allow the wonderful scrolling legs to remain clearly visible.

As with all items which we offer for sale, this table has been attended to in our workshops by our highly skilled and traditional antique furniture restorers, where it has received a natural wax polish before being offered for sale. It is therefore ready to place straight into the home.
