Rare 18th Century Georgian Mahogany Torchere Candle Stand (England, circa 1750)
Rare 18th Century Georgian Mahogany Torchere Candle Stand (England, circa 1750)
An Extremely Attractive And Untouched 18th Century, George II Period, Mahogany Torchere, Or Candlestand, Retaining Exceptional Rich Colour And Surface Throughout, The Octagonal Galleried Top Over Extremely Elegant Turned Column And Bold Tripod Legs, With Rare Original Lead Weighted Pad Feet.
The definition of a torchere is a lamp on a tall stand made of wood or metal. However these days any kind of tall antique table, or stand, upon which a lamp or candlesticks may have been placed upon tends to be referred to as a torchere. Alternatively you will sometimes hear an item like this referred to as a candle stand, the reason for which doesn’t really need explaining obviously.
This is a quite wonderful example, dating to the mid 18th century and very much English in its construction, unlike so many later Dutch examples which can be found for sale.
The mahogany timbers used for its construction are rich and dense and have retained a lovely colour. It has a really well figured top with an attractive original gallery and the turned support is incredibly elegant.
It is also nice to see that the turned support unscrews from the base, this is a feature very often found on 18th century occasional tables of this nature, but rarely found in later examples. This is due in large part to the craftsmanship and skill involved in creating the lovely internal thread. We would imagine that there is almost certainly the same thread at the top of the turned support, going into the bottom of the top, however clearly at some point in its history somebody has chosen to fix this solid.
Another stand out feature is the lead weights in the bottom of the feet, which are totally original. This is something you don’t see very often, but the reason behind it is clearly to ensure that the table remains balanced at all times. We think its a wonderful additional touch and really increases the overall charm of the piece, clearly indicating even further how much the original cabinet maker thought of every last detail.
This is a really useful little item which can be used in a wide variety of spaces around the home, basically anywhere that you would consider using a georgian lamp table, or wine table for example. It is also of course exceptionally elegant.
As with all of the items which we offer for sale this lovely little table has been attended to in our workshops by our highly skilled, traditional antique furniture restorers where it has been inspected and recieved a good clean plus a natural wax polish.
