A Very Good Quality George III Period Mahogany Central Standing Drum Top Library Table, Having Beautiful Gilt Tooled Replacement Leather Inset To Crossbanded Circular Rotating Top, Over Four Drawers, Unusually Alternating With Four Hinged Cupboard Doors To Frieze, With Later Brass Handles, Raised On Ring Turned Central Column And Four Elegant Splayed Legs With Original Brass Claw Castors.

Dating from the late 18th century, this extremely attractive drum library table is a particularly good example of its type, with the unusual arrangement of four drawers alternating with four individual cupboard doors making it considerably more interesting, and indeed more useful, than many examples one encounters.

Designed to stand centrally within a room and therefore finished all the way around, the circular top rotates freely on the base, allowing easy access to each of the drawers and cupboards from a seated position. The combination of enclosed cupboard storage alongside the more conventional drawers is relatively unusual and a lovely feature as opposed to just the false drawer fronts one normally finds on these items.

Constructed from good quality mahogany throughout, it retains a nice colour and surface, whilst the crossbanding around the edge of the top provides a subtle decorative contrast. The replacement burgundy leather has been extremely well chosen, with restrained gilt tooling which sits very comfortably alongside the warmth of the surrounding mahogany and gives the table exactly the right period appearance.

Drum tables of this form have always been particularly desirable pieces of Georgian library furniture and remain every bit as practical today. Naturally it would make a superb library or study table, but its relatively compact circular form and attractive appearance from every angle also make it ideal as a centre table in a large hallway, drawing room or open-plan living space.

As with all items which we offer for sale, this table has been attended to in our workshops by our highly skilled and traditional antique furniture restorers, where it has received a natural wax polish before being offered for sale. It is therefore ready to place straight into the home.
