An Extremely Unusual And Very Attractive Late 19th Century Walnut Hat And Coat Stand, In The Black Forest Taste, Having Square Upright Support Headed By Turned Finial, Mounted Throughout With Natural Deer Antler Hooks, Terminating With Circular Dished Base And Three Antler Feet.

Dating from the latter part of the 19th century, this wonderfully unusual hat and coat stand is very much in the Black Forest and sporting country house taste of the period, combining good quality walnut with an impressive collection of natural deer antlers.

The tall square walnut upright retains a good rich colour and is surmounted by a decorative turned finial, whilst the various natural antlers have been cleverly positioned at differing heights to provide a large number of useful hooks for hats, coats and other garments. Their wonderfully irregular shapes give the whole piece enormous character and ensure that it is equally appealing as a decorative object when not actually in use.

Towards the bottom is a circular dished walnut base, possibly for the storage of walking sticks and umbrellas, whilst the three particularly unusual antler feet continue the theme and provide a fitting finishing touch to the overall design.

Although extremely practical, the real appeal of this stand lies in its unusual appearance. It would have been perfectly at home in the entrance hall of a substantial country house or sporting residence when first made and remains an extremely decorative and functional piece of hall furniture today.

As with all items which we offer for sale, this hat and coat stand has been attended to in our workshops by our highly skilled and traditional antique furniture restorers, where it has received a natural wax polish before being offered for sale. It is therefore ready to place straight into the home.
