A Very Good Quality Late 18th Century, George III Period, Mahogany Hexagonal Shaped Tea Caddy, Having Elegant Conch Shell Inlaid To Hinged Top, Enclosing Lidded Interior With Original Brass Handle.

A really charming 18th century tea caddy which has proper elegance and sophistication in its construction. The timber used is high grade, rich mahogany and therefore the tea caddy retains a good colour and surface. The inlaid shell is also wonderfully executed and really adds to the overall charm of the piece.

Of course one of the key features is the shape. It is rare to find hexagonal shaped caddies and one of the reasons for this is the skill and craftsmanship required to execute putting it all together nicely. Certainly the person who made this particular antique tea caddy had more than enough skill to execute this perfectly.

Tea was an extremely precious commodity throughout the 18th and 19th centuries and the purpose of a tea caddy was not just to preserve the and extend the life of the precious tea leaves, but also to enable the owner to lock away those aforementioned valuable tea leaves, keeping them safe from the house staffs potential wandering hands.

This tea caddy comes with a fully functioning lock and key, plus has been cleaned and traditionally waxed polished by our highly skilled and well trained specialist antique furniture restorers in our workshops before being offered for sale.

It remains in relatively good condition and has clearly been well loved throughout the years of its life.
