Hepplewhite Harewood Occasional Table (England, circa 1785)
Hepplewhite Harewood Occasional Table (England, circa 1785)
An Extremely Rare And Exceptional Quality, 18th Century Hepplewhite Period Occasional Table, Having Superbly Well Figured Harewood Veneers, Enclosed By Elegant Walnut Crossbanding, With Profuse, Fine Marquetry Inlaid Decoration To All Sides And Top With Central Set Feature Book, Raised On Elegant Cabriole Legs.
This table is relatively small in form, but quite spectacular in terms of impact. Every last detail has been minutely planned and well thought out and the timbers used, along with the craftsmanship displayed by the cabinet makers, are exceptional.
The main wood used for the construction of this cabinet is Harewood, a timber which wass rarely used in large scale furniture due to the great expense involved in the process. Actually, Harewood is not a wood itself, but instead it is a stained Sycamore, usually with a greenish hue originally, which more often than not has now worn away. It is a great sign of quality in an item as it took great skill and expense to initially treat, prepare and work. It can now be relatively easily identified by the distinctive flecked/fiddleback appearance of the grain and of course whatever remains of the greenish/grey initial appearance.
The marquetry decoration is also quite spectacular, incredibly fine detailing and cleverly thought out in terms of its content and positioning. Goodness knows how many hours, days and weeks it must have taken to execute this inlaid decoration alone.
As with all the items we offer for sale this centre table has been attended to in our workshops and received a natural wax polish, from our highly skilled, traditional antique furniture restorers, ensuring that it is ready to be placed straight into the home.
