Georgian Mahogany Games Table (England, circa 1800)
Georgian Mahogany Games Table (England, circa 1800)
An Exceptionally Attractive George III Period Mahogany Games Table, Having Well Figured Top, The Reversible, Removable Central Slide Having Inlaid Chess Board To Back Enclosing Leather Backgammon Board Surface, Flanked By Two Frieze Drawers, Raised On Elegant Shaped End Supports With Ebonised Inlay Decoration And Four Sabre Legs Retaining Original Brass Castors.
With much more to it than initially meets the eye this rather neat and elegant little georgian mahogany games table really is a rather lovely piece of furniture.
It manages to relatively seamlessly combine an elegant, occasional lamp table and a table which has the ability to be used for both chess and backgammon which were of course exceptionally popular pastimes in the georgian era. All that is required is a simple flip of the central slide to allow for chess, or complete removal for backgammon. You can also take the chess board away and use independently from the table should you wish.
Overall the quality is good, constructed from well figured, good mahogany timbers and the table has stood the test of time extremely well. It retains its original brass castors as well which is a nice feature. The general condition is good with a few old repairs, as expected on something of this age, but nothing out of the ordinary or unexpected to worry about.
As with all items which we offer for sale it has also been inspected by our highly skilled, traditional furniture restorers in our workshops to ensure it is in tip top condition to be placed immediately into a retail environment. It has also received a traditional, natural wax polish.
