Georgian Mahogany Birdcage Tripod Table (England, circa 1720)
Georgian Mahogany Birdcage Tripod Table (England, circa 1720)
A Very Fine Quality 18th Century George II Period Mahogany Occasional Table, Having Superbly Figured, Revolving, Circular Top With Moulded Dish Edge, Over Crisp Solid Mahogany Birdcage Support And Elegant Gun Barrel Turned Column, Terminating On Tripod Legs.
A good 20, or 30 years older than the majority of tables which sport this design this is a really great piece of George II furniture.
The overall quality of the construction and unbelivably dense, rich timbers used, including for even the birdcage itself is an incredibly rare feature and a sure sign that it was originally constucted in a top 18th Century cabinet makers London workshop.
For reference the purpose of the birdcage support, other than to look elegant is to allow for the table top to rotate freely on its base, unlike similar tables of the period which dont have this feature. The top and base are also totally detachable from each other.
It is also quite rare to find such a simple turned column and moulded dish top, these are very much features which help date the construction to the first half of the 18th century, rather than the second half.
As with all our items this table has been attended to in our workshops by our skilled antique furniture restorers and received a clean plus natural beeswax polish. It is now very much in reatil condition and ready to be placed striaght into the home.
