An Extremely Attractive And Very Good Quality 18th Century Georgian Mahogany Gainsborough Library Armchair, Having High Camel Back And Open Sides, The Padded Arms With Attractive Foliate Carved Swept Supports, Over Mildly Shaped Seat, Raised On Shallow Fluted Square Legs And Old Brass Roller Castors.

Gainsborough chairs of this form were amongst the most comfortable and substantial armchairs produced during the Georgian period and this is a particularly attractive example, combining generous proportions with an elegant and relatively restrained design.

Constructed from good quality mahogany throughout, it retains a pleasing rich colour and surface, with the shaped and finely carved arm supports adding just enough decorative interest. The shallow fluting to the square legs is another particularly nice detail, whilst the old brass roller castors remain in place below.

The chair is extremely comfortable and, despite its generous proportions and high back, remains elegant in appearance. It would work equally well as a traditional library or fireside chair, or as a statement armchair within a more contemporary interior.

As with all items which we offer for sale this chair has been attended to in our workshops, where it has received a natural wax polish and any necessary traditional restoration, before being offered for sale ready to place straight into the home.
