Georgian 18th Century Satinwood Pier Table (England, circa 1790)
Georgian 18th Century Satinwood Pier Table (England, circa 1790)
A Very Good Quality Late 18th Century Satinwood Demi Lune Shaped Pier Table, or Console Table, Having Extremely Well Figured Top With Attractive Crossbanded Decoration, Over Shallow Frieze With Strung Panels To Top Of Elegant Square Tapered Legs.
The term “pier table’ is generally used to refer to antique tables which were probably made to stand between the windows of a large country house, up against the brick piers, generally adorned with a sumptious candlebra with a grand pier mirror of some kind above. Of course not every table referred to now as a pier table was made specifically for this purpose and many were actually probably just made as side tables.
Pier tables come in a whole variety of shapes, sizes, qualities, designs and timbers. This particular example is a good one. Constructed from beautiful, rich, satinwood veneers, which has lovely figuring, it also boasts well thought out, elegant crossbanded decoration.
The table is a great shape and size, perfect for so many different spaces, on so many different walls and incredibly elegant, whilst also being very functional indeed. The deim lune shape adds extra function and elegance as always, allowing the prospective purchaser to site the table in spots which are perhaps slightly narrower than would allow for a straight fronted example.
The condition is good, no issues to speak of and clearly the table has been well loved and well looked after throughout its life. As with all items which we offer for sale, it has been inspected in our workshops, by our highly skilled, trained traditional antique furniture restorers to ensure all is in order and also received a light natural wax polish, before being presented for sale.
