Georgian 18th Century Mahogany Bowfront Chest Of Drawers (England, circa 1780)

A Very Fine Quality Late 18th Century Sheraton Period George III Period Mahogany Bowfront Chest, Having Fitted Top Drawer Incorporating Various Compartments And Ratcheted Slope, Over Three Long Drawers With Satinwood Crossbanding And Old Replacement Brass Handles, Raised On Elegant Original Splayed Bracket Feet.

This lovely quality chest of drawers dates to the late 18th century and is of very typical design for the late hepplewhite, early sheraton period with features from both periods incoporated.

The mahogany timbers used are of good quality and were clearly carefully selected and the overall quality of construction is second to none. Also it is another great sign of quality to see the wide satinwood crossbanded decoration.

A very unusual and nice feature of this particular chest is the concealed fitted drawer, contained within the slide at the top. Many chests of this period feature a brushing slide, or similar thin slide of some kind, however it is most unusual to find one of this additional depth which incorporates the various compartments and ratcheted, baized slope.

There are no structural defects or areas of significant historical damage to speak of, just the expected old marks, blemishes and areas of historic restoration which have blended into the surface and one would expect to find on an item which is well over 200 years old. As mentioned in the description the brass handles are replacements, however they fit stylistically with the period of the chest and have clearly been in situ for a very long while indeed, highlighted by the minor damage to the backplates of a couple of them. The elegant splay feet are original.

As with all the items we offer for sale it has been inspected and attended to in our workshops by our well trained and highly skilled, specialist antique furniture restorers and it has received a natural wax polish to ensure it is presented for sale in the absolute best possible condition meaning that it ready for immediate placement within the home.
