George II Mahogany Silver Table (England, circa 1730)
George II Mahogany Silver Table (England, circa 1730)
A Wonderful 18th Century George II Period Mahogany Silver Table, Of Unusual Diminutive Proportions, Having Well Figured Top With Cavetto Moulded Gallery Edge Over Figured Frieze Raised On Four Elegant Turned Legs Headed With Carved Lappets Terminating On Original Pad Feet.
Stamped “R.R.” To Underside.
The term “Silver Table” is taken from the fact that this form, or design, of central standing table in the early 18th century and beyond were normally used in the dining room, or sometimes the drawing room, to hold the silver ware and cutlery ready for use in dining and tea services.
They are relatively distinct from a normal side type table due to the fact they are generally finished on all four sides for central standing and would nearly always have some kind of gallery, or raised rim, to the top with idea this should stop the objects stored on it from easily slipping off.
This is a particularly nice example of an early Georgian Silver Table as it is a little smaller than normally found. It is also in exceptionally good condition still, retaining a beautiful untouched colour and patina to the carefully selected mahogany timber.
This table has simply been naturally waxed in the traditional manner by our skilled restorers before being offered for sale ready to place immediately into the home.
