An Extremely Attractive Early 18th Century George II Period Walnut Lowboy Having Well Figured Quarter Veneered Top With Banded Decoration, Over Three Drawers Retaining Original Brass Plate Handles To Extremely Elegant Shaped Frieze, Raised On Stiff Cabriole Legs And Original Pointed Pad Feet.

Throughout the first half of the 18th century any form of side table was generally referred to as a lowboy and always constructed from rich, attractive solid timbers and veneers due to the plentiful supply of it at the time.

This is an exceptionally nice example of its type, with attractive quarter veneered top, which is always a great sign of quality and an extremely elegant shaped freize really adds to the decorative appeal of this piece.

It has certainly aged well retaining a lovely warm colour and its original brasswear which is quite rare on an item of furniture of this age. There are of course plenty of historic lumps, bumps, scrapes, slightly off straight legs and general signs of age, but nothing which is out of keeping for an item this old. Indeed we would say the condition is actually very good and that clearly this walnut lowboy has been well loved, but also well used throughout its life.

As with all items which we offer for sale this walnut side table has been inspected in our workshops by our highly skilled, trained traditional antique furniture restorers and received a natural wax polish to ensure it is in its best possible condition and ready to be placed straight into the home before being offered for sale.

It is also interesting to note that this piece is believed to have once graced the boyhood home of George Howson, founder of well known charity The Poppy Factory. There was various papers, letters and even what was believed to be a prototype poppy inside the drawers when we purchased it and this has all been forwarded on to The Poppy Factory for them to use in their museum as they see fit. Photographed is the one letter remaining with the lowboy, written by George in 1901 from his school and sent home to his mother, plus a storage sticker which remains attached to the piece showing it belonged to Mrs Howson.
