Small Georgian Mahogany Secretaire Bookcase (England, circa 1760)
Small Georgian Mahogany Secretaire Bookcase (England, circa 1760)
An Extremely Good Quality 18th Century, Georgian, Chippendale Period, Mahogany Library Bookcase, Of Attractive Small Proportions, Having Inlaid Decoration To Cornice Over Pair Of 13 Pane Astragal Glazed Doors, Enclosing Three Adjustable Shelves, To Top, Over Three Long Drawers To Base Incorporating Secretaire Writing Drawer With Well Fitted Interior And Original Brass Swan Neck Handles, Raised On Elegant Original Shaped Bracket Feet.
This charming little 18th century, georgian, mahogany bookcase is in many ways an absolute typical example of the chippendale period, but it has a few features which lift it up and beyond the norm so to speak.
Firstly it boasts an excellent small, functional, practical size which would allow it to be used in just about any environment one could imagine. Unlike so many bookcases of this period the size means it boasts real elegance and this is further enhanced by the additional design elements such as the inlaid cornice, beautifully fitted secretaire drawer and lovely astragal glazed decoration.
The bookcase also retains an excellent colour and surface, it has clearly never been stripped or repolished or anything like that and the rich mahogany timbers which have been used in its construction now boast a lovely rich, warm, colour to them which would be impossible to recreate.
It is in very good condition overall, with just a few old marks, scuffs, scrapes and digs as one would expect on a practical item of furniture of this age. The worst of these scrapes and digs have been photographed for reference, but in all honesty they pretty much blend in with the overall surface of the piece and are only noticable with close inspection. The bookcase also reatains its original brass handles and its original bracket feet which is a nice feature. We believe most of the glazing in the doors to be original although there is of course no way of being certain of this.
As with all items of stock which we offer this 18th century bookcase has been attended to and received a natural wax polish before being placed on sale, in our workshops by our highly skilled, trained antique furniture restorers to ensure that it is in the best possible condition and ready for immediate placement within the home or office after purchase.
