An Exceptional Quality Late Regency Period Mahogany Window Seat, Or Hall Bench, Retaining Superb Rich Colour And Patina Throughout, Having Well Figured Rectangular Top With Carved Decoration And Applied Turned Rolls To Each End, Over Panelled Frieze Raised On Elegant Tulip Carved Turned Tapering Legs.

Window seats, or hall benches, of this general form were produced throughout the 19th century and beyond and therefore examples can be found in a wide variety of different sizes and qualities. This particular example, however, is certainly towards the very top end in terms of quality, with considerably more attention to detail and refinement than one would often find.

Constructed from extremely good quality mahogany throughout, it has developed a superb rich colour and patina over the course of the last 200 years or so. The top is particularly well figured, whilst the carved decoration, panelled frieze and finely executed turned rolls to each end all add considerably more interest than is normally found on benches of this type.

A real standout feature however is the tulip carved, turned and tapering legs, which are particularly well executed and give the whole piece a real sense of elegance, whilst at the same time it remains extremely sturdy and practical for everyday use.

One of the attractions of these items has always been their versatility and that is probably even more relevant today than when they were originally made. Naturally it would work perfectly underneath a window, or in a hallway, but equally it could be placed at the end of a bed, behind a settee, or even utilised as an unusual narrow coffee table. Our accompanying lifestyle photographs hopefully demonstrate just some of the many possibilities.

Overall the condition is extremely good, with the inevitable old marks, knocks, wear and minor imperfections which one would expect from around 200 years of use.

As with all items which we offer for sale, this window seat has been inspected and attended to in our workshops by our trained antique furniture restorers, where it has received a natural wax polish to ensure that it is ready for immediate placement within the home.
