Georgian Walnut Tea Caddy (England, circa 1730)
Georgian Walnut Tea Caddy (England, circa 1730)
A Very Fine George II Period 18th Century Burr Walnut Tea Caddy Having Superbly Figured Top With Original Brass Swan Neck Handle Enclosing Divided Interior, With Cross Banded And Herringbone Inlay Decoration Throughout, Canted Corners And Original Bracket Feet.
It’s difficult to know where to start with this wonderful George II period tea caddy.
It never ceases to amaze me how sometimes the simplest of pieces can at the same time be the most elegant and beautiful. This relatively simple 18th century tea caddy is constructed from fabulous, decorative burr walnut veneers. It also retains its original swan neck handle. The canted corners are yet another sign of class and elegance, as are the original bracket feet.
Further to all of the features above this charming little tea caddy has also managed to retain a wonderful rise, warm colour and patina.
It is rare to find tea caddies this early in date, even rare to find them constructed from burr walnut and even rare still for them to be this elegant and remain in such fabulous condition. This is definitely one for the collection.
Tea was a precious commodity throughout the 18th and 19th centuries and the purpose of a tea caddy was not just to preserve the and extend the life of the precious tea leaves, but also to enable the owner to lock away those aforementioned valuable tea leaves, keeping them safe from the house staffs potential wandering hands.
This Georgian tea caddy comes with a fully functioning lock and key, plus has been cleaned and traditionally waxed polished in our workshops before being offered for sale.
