Georgian 18th Century Burr Yew Wood Octagonal Tea Caddy (England, circa 1790)

SOLD

A delightful George III period, late 18th century
Burr yew wood octagonal shaped tea caddy
Having charming inlaid decoration, including
Conch shells, and hinged lid enclosing lidded
Divisions with fully working lock and key

(This is a very attractive example of an 18th century
Tea caddy, constructed from beautiful burr yew wood
with elegant decoration including a couple of superbly
inlaid conch shells. Overall it is in good condition and
it comes with a fully functioning lock and key. Tea was
of exceptional value in the 18th century
and the type of tea you could afford, plus of course
the vessels you chose to store it in were a great symbol
of status. Tea caddies were used both to preserve
tea leaves and also to lock it away from the potentially
wandering hands of any employees.)
