Dating from the early part of the 19th century, this really is an exceptional quality Regency tea table, with the superb selection of pollard oak veneers and unusually bold architectural design making it a particularly striking example of its type.

The timber is undoubtedly one of the standout features, with wonderfully figured pollard oak veneers used extensively throughout the top, frieze, pedestal and base. The top is further enhanced by contrasting crossbanded decoration and particularly fine gadrooned mouldings around the edge, whilst retaining a lovely warm colour and surface.

Designed specifically as a tea table, the top swivels before folding open to provide a considerably larger surface when required. When closed however it remains relatively compact and has all the appearance of an extremely handsome side or centre table, allowing it to remain both decorative and useful when not being used for its original purpose.

The base is every bit as impressive as the top, with a bold reverse tapering square pedestal incorporating beautifully figured recessed panels and then wonderful carved lion’s paw feet, which provide a suitably strong finishing touch to the design.

Pollard oak was particularly prized during the Regency period for the dramatic figuring of its grain and, when used in this quantity and quality, creates an incredibly rich decorative effect. Combined here with the restrained crossbanding, gadrooned mouldings and powerful pedestal base, it gives the table a real sense of quality without becoming overly elaborate.

Although originally intended for taking tea, its versatility is perhaps even more relevant today. When closed it would make a superb side table against a wall, or an impressive centre table in a hallway or drawing room, whilst the foldover top provides the additional surface area whenever required.

As with all items which we offer for sale, this table has been attended to in our workshops by our highly skilled and traditional antique furniture restorers, where it has received a natural wax polish before being offered for sale. It is therefore ready to place straight into the home.
