18th Century Georgian Yew Wood Octagonal Tea Caddy (England, circa 1790)

SOLD

A charming George III period 18th century yew wood
octagonal tea caddy having attractive chequered strung
decoration throughout and hinged top enclosing lidded
divisions with fully working key

(Tea was of exceptional value in the 18th century
and the type of tea you could afford, plus of course
the vessels you chose to store it in were a great symbol
of status. Tea caddies were of course used to both
preserve the tea leaves bit also to lock it away from the
potentially wandering hands of any employees. This is a
good quality example of its type, constructed from well
beautiful yew wood with elegant decoration. The overall
condition is good and it comes with a fully functioning
lock and key),

circa 1790
