A Good Quality And Very Attractive 18th Century George III Period, Chippendale Mahogany Kettle Stand, Or Wine Table, Having Circular Piecrust Edge To Dished Top, Raised On Elegant Turned Column With Wrythen Carved Decoration, Terminating On Tripod Legs And Pointed Pad Feet.

Kettle stands, sometimes also referred to as wine tables by antique dealers, are among the most versatile and useful forms of small Georgian furniture. Originally conceived during the 18th century as elegant stands on which to place a hot kettle for the serving of tea, they were also frequently employed for supporting wine bottles, decanters and glasses beside a chair in the drawing room. Their relatively compact proportions and refined appearance have ensured that they remain just as practical today, lending themselves perfectly to use as occasional tables, lamp tables or decorative stands throughout the home.

Being of relatively modest proportions, these elegant little tables are exceptionally easy to accommodate within both traditional and contemporary interiors, making them one of the most practical and versatile forms of Georgian furniture available today.

This is a particularly pleasing example, displaying all of the elegant characteristics associated with the Chippendale period designs. The moulded piecrust gallery to the circular dished top is crisply executed, whilst the turned central column also boasts attractive wrythen carved decoration, providing both strength and visual elegance. The whole is supported on a typical tripod base terminating on pointed pad feet, a form which has remained one of the most enduringly popular designs of the Georgian period.

The table remains in very good condition after some 260 years of use and retains an excellent rich colour throughout. There is no significant historical damage to report, merely the expected minor marks, scuffs, knocks and the odd old repair accumulated over more than two and a half centuries of careful use, all of which now blend sympathetically into the surface and simply serve to enhance its authenticity and character.

Having been inspected in our workshops by our highly skilled, traditional antique furniture restorers, the table has received a natural wax polish ensuring it is ready for immediate placement and use.
