Very Large Regency 19th Century Mahogany Partners Writing Table (England, circa 1825)
Very Large Regency 19th Century Mahogany Partners Writing Table (England, circa 1825)
A Superb Quality Early 19th Century Regency Period Georgian Mahogany Partners Writing Table, In The Manner Of Gillows Of Lancaster & London, Having Very Attractive Old Gilt Tooled Leather Inset To Crossbanded Top, Over Six Oak Lined Frieze Drawers Fitted With Replacement Turned Brass Knob Handles, Raised On Four Extremely Elegant Turned And Tapering Reeded Legs, Terminating On Fine Quality Brass Cup Castors Stamped “Howard & Sons, London”.
This is an absolute top quality Regency period mahogany partners writing table, which some may refer to as a Georgian library table, which has most definitely been produced by one of the very top early 19th Century London cabinet making workshops. In fact interestingly despite not being stamped, or signed by them, it bears all of the hallmarks of the internationally respected Gillows workshops. Many of the features bear great resemblence to documented Gillows examples and we would be fairly comfortable with assigning an attribution of Gillows to this piece.
It is however also worth noting that it sports 19th century castors, which appear likely to be original, stamped by another extremely well known and respected firm, Howard & Sons. Although far better known and celebrated for their later 19th century soft furnishings like library chairs and sofas, Howard & Sons did originate in 1820 as general cabinet makers, so there is a possibility that actually this table could have been an early piece from their workshops. Alternatively they could have supplied the brass castors to Gillows for fitting onto the table as Gillows did use a variety of external suppliers for their brass furnishings.
Either way it doesn’t really matter who the original maker is as suffice to say that this table is really exceptionally elegant, whilst also being incredibly functional. There are 6 oak lined drawers, three to each side and a huge writing surface, allowing 2 people to comfortably work opposite each other if required, or alternatively one person to have a large workspace to themselves. It would also serve as a very attractive sofa type table, or library table in the right setting.
Overall the condition is very good, with an extremely attractive old leather top which is in excellent condition throughout and has a great lustre to it, with just one slighty smoothed rectangular area on one side in the middle which is almost certainly where a previous owner has had some kind of blotter pad or similar sat on the same spot for many, many years. This area can be seen on various listing images and actually we think adds a nice bit of history to the piece. It is also worth bearing in mind that once loaded up with the usual desk top items this area will not be noticable at all anyway. That said should the new owner really want a brand new, spotless leather then this is something which we can have our restorer fit order and fit, in a colour of choice, before delivery relatively inexpensively.
The handles are probably replacements handles and there are a few very minor old repairs, as one would expect on something of this age, which you have to look exceptionally closely to even find, none of which are aesthetically displeasing or even noticeable and the table is very much fit for original purpose with working keys to the drawers.
As with all items we offer for sale this partners writing table has been inspected and attended to in our workshops, by our highly skilled, trained traditional antique furniture restorers and received a natural wax polish before being placed on sale, ensuring it is ready for immediate placement within the home or office.
