A Very Fine Quality Late Regency Period Mahogany Canterbury, Of Unusual Form, With Elegant Turned Spindle Type Supports To Outer Gallery Enclosing Solid Shaped Dividers, Over One Frieze Drawer With Replacement Brass Handles, Raised On Elegant Tall Turned Legs Terminating On Original Brass Castors.

This is an extremely nice Canterbury and exudes elegance, class and sophistication. It is unusual in terms of it’s design, with the incredibly elegant turned spindle supports only around the outside edge and actually two well figured, solid mahogany dividers to seperate the inner part. It is far more common to find the divisions are simply seperated via further turned supports of the same design as the outer edge and we really like this slightly more punchy design, plus there is the additional benefit of more solid wood being involved resulting in something even more sturdy than usual!

It is widely believed that canterburies are named as such due to the first object of this design being commissioned by the Archbishop of Canterbury in the late 18th century.

Although the original format is believed to have had divisions in both directions and purposed for the storage of cutlery in the dining room, the design soon progressed and was adapted, resulting in them being manufactured mainly for the storage of sheet music from the early 19th century onwards.

Nowadays of course Canterbury’s are the perfect object for collecting up all those magazines and newspapers which are lying around in the living room, study, office or any other area around the home and storing them tidily away whilst still retaining relatively easy access to them.
