An Extremely Rare And Very Attractive Mid 19th Century French Giltwood And Gesso Rectangular Wall Mirror, In The Louis XVI Style, Having Attractive Central Carved Shell Flanked By Intertwined Leaves To Top. Over Bevelled Oval Plate Within Fine Carved Oval Frame To Centre, Flanked By Mirrored Spandrels To Each Corner Forming The Rectangular Outer Frame, With Wonderfully Carved Trailing Husks, Scrolls And Acanthus Foliate Carving.

This is a really unusual design of mirror, the like of which we have not really seen much similar to before. It is really quite elegant indeed and the gilded oval frame set centrally is quite lovely by itself, before even considering the outer frame and lovely carved decoration which goes with that.

The mirror is a really good size, it would fill a good chunk of wall space by itself and has great presence, but it is not so overpoweringly large that it would need a huge empty space and totally dominate other items.

Overall the condition is relatively good. As one would expect with an antique gilded mirror there are various old repairs and minor losses, and there are a few areas where the gilding has rubbed or been chipped away. These all blend in perfectly well however and are exactly as one would expect from a 19th century mirror.

The mirror plates themselves appear to be original and as can be seen from the images there are some minor areas of silvering and pitting, but again only what one would expect on a piece of this age and they certainly don’t affect functionality at all.

As with all objects which we offer for sale this mirror has been attended to in our workshops by our highly skilled antique furniture restorers to ensure its in the best possible condition and ready for immediate placement within the home before being offered for sale.
