Small 19th Century Gilt Pier Mirror (England, circa 1850)
Small 19th Century Gilt Pier Mirror (England, circa 1850)
A Very Attractive Mid 19th Century Gilt Pier Mirror, Of Unusually Small Proportions, Having Elegant Foliate Pattern Verre Églomisé Panel, Over Original Mirror Plate Flanked By Elegant Half Turned Fluted Columns, Headed By Carved Scrolling Capitals.
This mid 19th century gilt pier mirror is a lovely, sweet size and could be used in a whole variety of different places due to its elegance.
It remains in relatively good condition with just the expected old marks, scuffs, scrapes and repairs commensurate with an item of this age. Certainly there is nothing visually distracting here. It also retains its original mirror plate which is nice.
Also original to the piece is the beautiful, floral, verre églomisé panel in the top. Verre églomisé is a French term referring to the process of applying both a design and gilding onto the rear face of glass to produce a mirror finish and nearly always adds a real touch of class and sophistication wherever it is used.
The term “Pier” mirror is generally used to describe an antique mirror whose proportions are relatively tall and narrow. As the name suggests this is because they were originally made to hang on the brick piers between the windows of a room.
Of course this particular mirror is small enough to be used on any space, on any wall, in any setting.
Circa 1850.
Height 27.5in.
Width 19in.
Depth 2.5in
