A Good Quality Late 18th Century George III Period Mahogany Bowfront Chest, Of Very Rare Small Proportions, Having Well Figured Top With Attractive Strung Decoration, Over Three Long Drawers Retaining Original Brass Oval Plate Handles, Raised On Elegant Original Splayed Feet And Shaped Apron.

Dating from the late 18th century, this extremely attractive little bowfront chest is a particularly charming example of its type, with the unusually small proportions making it considerably rarer, and indeed more useful, than the larger examples which one normally encounters.

Constructed from good quality mahogany throughout, it retains a lovely rich colour and surface, with attractive natural figuring to the top and drawer fronts. The restrained strung decoration around the top and lower edge provides a subtle contrast and is typical of the elegant, understated decoration fashionable during the George III period.

The three graduated long drawers provide a surprising amount of useful storage for a chest of such diminutive proportions and importantly retain their original brass oval plate handles, which are particularly attractive and sit beautifully against the warmth of the mahogany.

The shaped apron and elegant original splayed feet complete the design particularly well and give the chest a lightness which perfectly complements its small scale and gently bowed front.

It is of course the proportions which really set this chest apart. Small Georgian chests are always particularly desirable, and an original bowfront example of this size is considerably harder to find. Aside from its obvious use as a conventional chest of drawers, its compact dimensions would allow it to work particularly well as an oversized bedside chest, in a hallway, or anywhere around the home where useful storage is required without a large piece of furniture becoming overly imposing.

As with all items which we offer for sale, this chest has been attended to in our workshops by our highly skilled and traditional antique furniture restorers, where it has received a natural wax polish before being offered for sale. It is therefore ready to place straight into the home.
