Rectangular 19th Century Gilt Overmantle Mirror (England, circa 1860)
Rectangular 19th Century Gilt Overmantle Mirror (England, circa 1860)
An Extremely Charming Mid 19th Century, Victorian Period, Giltwood And Gesso Rectangular Overmantle Mirror, Or Pier Mirror, Having Mostly Original Sectioned Mirror Plates Set Within Attractively Carved Foliate Borders.
A very attractive and decorative mirror from the mid 19th century victorian period which also boasts great scale and proportions. It has been designed in an 18th century style despite dating to around 1860 or so in terms of its construction. The carved elements are particularly nice and the mirror would add elegance as well as function to any room around the house.
It is also worth noting that unlike most similar mirrors the carving is symetrical, meaning that the mirror can be hung portrait or landscape to suit. A great piece of added versatility.
The gilding itself is is attractive and in good condition, but of course it has no doubt been touched up and lightly refreshed throughout the years, however it certainly doesn’t appear to have ever been totally regilded which is nice.
In terms of overall condition there are a few old marks, digs, breaks and scuffs as one would expect. We also believe the majority of the mirror plates themselves could be original, certainly they are old at the very least, but probably original.
There are no major structural defects or issues and it is relatively solid throughout, ready for immediate placement within the home following purchase.
Circa 1860.
Height 58in.
Width 36in.
Depth 1.75in.
