Robert Manwaring was both a contemporary and also imitator of the great Thomas Chippendale himself. He took a huge amount of pride in his work, which often featured intricate designs and his speciality was very much chairs with elaborate backs. Manwaring was often known to have described his own works upon completion as “elegant” and “superb” and the designs for some of his chairbacks are so similar to Chippendales that it is impossible not to assume that one was copying the other.

This pair of chairs are constructed from wonderfully rich, dense, mahogany timber and that is what has allowed for the elegant design of the carved backs, which incidentally is exceptionally well executed. They also feature good size seats, which wasn’t always the case for chairs of this period and typical square legs with stretchers.

Overall the chairs are in very good condition with just a couple of old small repairs to the woodwork which are not easily spotted and they are very much ready for immediate use. The upholstered seats which were probably recovered quite some time ago are in good condition with just a few very minor blemishes. The purchaser could easily have these recovered in a fabric of their choice after purchase at relatively minor expense following purchase should they wish however.

As with all of the items which we offer for sale this pair of 18th century armchairs have received a natural wax polish and full inspection by our specialist antique furniture restorers before being offered for sale.
