A Good Quality Mid 19th Century Mahogany Miniature Chest Of Drawers, Having Well Figured Top Over Two Short And Three Long Drawers, Retaining Original Ebonised Turned Wooden Knobs, Raised On Original Turned Bun Feet.

Dating from the middle part of the 19th century, this charming little chest is a good example of miniature furniture, essentially replicating the form and construction of a full-size chest of drawers, but on a much smaller scale.

Constructed from good quality mahogany throughout, it retains a pleasing rich colour and surface, with attractive natural figuring to the top and drawer fronts. The original ebonised turned wooden knobs provide a nice contrast against the mahogany and are particularly pleasing to find still in place.

The traditional arrangement of two short drawers over three graduated long drawers is typical of a full-size chest of the period, whilst the original turned bun feet give the piece a nicely balanced appearance and complete the simple design particularly well.

As is so often the case with miniature furniture, it is difficult to establish its exact original purpose with any certainty. Pieces such as this could have been made as an apprentice or cabinetmaker’s model to demonstrate skill, as a travelling salesman’s sample, or simply as a decorative and practical object in its own right.

As with all items which we offer for sale, this miniature chest has been attended to in our workshops by our highly skilled and traditional antique furniture restorers, where it has received a natural wax polish before being offered for sale. It is therefore ready to place straight into the home.
