Large Early 19th Century Sycamore Farmhouse Kitchen Dining Table, French Provincial (France, circa 1820)
Large Early 19th Century Sycamore Farmhouse Kitchen Dining Table, French Provincial (France, circa 1820)
A Charming Early 19th Century French Sycamore Farmhouse Kitchen Dining Table, To Seat Up To 10 People, Having Wonderful Thick Three Plank Top, Featuring Cleated Ends, Retaining Superb Pale Colour And Surface Throughout, The Elegant Shaped Friezes With Attractive Scrolling Carved Detail To Each Corner, Raised On Bold Square Legs.
This is a really charming example of an early 19th century French farmhouse table, constructed from sycamore throughout and retaining the wonderful pale colour and surface which one associates with Sycamore tables of this period.
The thick three plank top is undoubtedly a standout feature, with lots of natural figuring to the timber, along with the inevitable old marks, stains, scuffs and imperfections which have accumulated throughout the course of its 200 years or so of use. None of these detract aesthetically in any way at all, instead combining beautifully to create the lovely surface and overall character of the table.
The base is also attractive and slightly more decorative than many farmhouse tables, due to its shaped friezes and unusual scrolling detail to each corner. The bold square legs provide plenty of strength and stability, whilst the absence of any low stretchers ensures there is nothing to interfere with the legs of those sitting around the table.
At some point during its long history the very bottom of each leg has been tipped, or built up slightly. This has been very sympathetically carried out and one has to look very hard to even spot the repairs as they blend in so well with the rest of the table. It is an extremely common repair to farmhouse tables of this age, carried out to compensate for the years of standing on damp and cold stone floors.
At 86in long the table provides excellent usable dining space and can accommodate up to 10 people when required, whilst the relatively narrow 33in depth makes it particularly practical for modern day use. It therefore offers a great combination of generous seating capacity without becoming overly imposing or requiring an excessively large room. Its also worth noting that the top is removable, making it extremely easy to get into any room required, no matter how challenging the access.
A wonderfully honest and attractive early French farmhouse table, retaining superb colour, surface and character throughout, whilst remaining strong, sturdy and entirely practical for regular everyday use.
As with all items which we offer for sale it has been naturally wax polished, in the traditional manner, by our specialist antique furniture restorers before being offered for sale, ensuring it is ready to be placed straight into the home.
