Georgian Mahogany Bachelors Cupboard (England, circa 1790)
Georgian Mahogany Bachelors Cupboard (England, circa 1790)
An Extremely Unusual George III Period Mahogany Bachelors Chest On Cupboard, Of Rare Small Proportions, Having Six Short Drawers With Mostly Original Brass Handles, Over Leather Inset Writing Slide And Panelled Cupboard Door Enclosing Shelf, Raised On Original Plinth Base, Retaining Good Rich, Untouched Colour And Patina Throughout.
This is certainly an unusual piece of furniture, the like of which we have not quite come across before. It is incredibly narrow, possibly built for a very specific space. It is also very beautiful, retaining a gorgeous rich colour and just standing very elegantly.
Due to it being of a form and size which is so rarely found it is a little difficult to pinpoint exactly what its original purpose would have been, although it was quite possibly made for an office, study or library of a large home.
Certainly it is most charming though and appears to all be relatively original other than a few replaced glue blocks and the brass handle on the bottom drawer which has a slightly different, but old drop. Its also worth noting that it has a lovely old, panelled back, which has been relatively crudely attached, but this could be for any number of reasons, most likely of which is that it was just made in a country workshop. There is also the possibility that it has been taken off, an inch or two shaved off the back of the item and then re-attached at some point a very long time ago, or that the back itself is actually a very old replacement panel. Whichever of these is the reason it certainly doesn’t affect the value and charm of the piece, if anything it adds to the intrigue of it.
Certainly this Georgian Mahogany Cupboard is at fit for original purpose as the day it was made and in the right space it would of course be most useful indeed for modern living and a great storage solution whilst also adding elegance to any room desired.
As with all items which we offer for sale this 18th Century Cupboard has been inspected by our highly skilled antique furniture restorers to ensure it is in good retail condition and polished in the traditional manner using natural waxes before being offered for sale.
