Georgian 18th Century Miniature Mahogany Tripod Table (England, circa 1750)
Georgian 18th Century Miniature Mahogany Tripod Table (England, circa 1750)
A Very Good Quality 18th Century, George II Period, Mahogany Miniature Tripod Table, Having Well Figured Circular Tilting Top With Original Brass Catch, Raised On Elegant Vase Turned Central Support, Terminating On Bold Tripod Legs And Pointed Pad Feet.
There is generally much debate as to the original purpose regarding the majority of items of miniature furniture, with lots of people believing them to all be “apprentice pieces”.
This was when an aspiring craftsmen who was seeking work at an established cabinet making workshop would create something to showcase his talents.
Many others however believe that they were made as “salesman’s sample pieces” which was when scale models of a workshop’s output were made in advance of a road trip, during which the salesman used these models to present to prospective clients and take orders based on their designs.
Miniature centre tables come in many different shapes, sizes, qualities and designs and were nearly always created as salesman’s sample pieces, i.e. scale models of bigger versions.
This particular example is nice as it is 18th century, not 19th century like the majority and it has been constructed from good quality, rich mahogany. It also stands on very bold tripod legs and remains in very good condition.
Circa 1750.
Height – 13.75in.
Diameter – 12in.
