Channel Islands Georgian Mahogany Serpentine Chest (England, circa 1780)

SOLD

A Delightful And Extremely Good Quality, 18th Century, Georgian Mahogany Serpentine Chest Of Channel Islands Design, Having Superbly Figured Top With Crossbanded Decoration, Over Four Long Drawers With Replacement Brass Handles, Flanked By Canted Corners With Attractive Inlaid Decoration, Raised On Extremely Unusual, Original Scrolling Bracket Feet.

Furniture originating from the channel islands is normally a little more flamboyant and decorative than its English counterparts of the time, whilst not being anywhere near as fussy as the French furniture of the time. It would appear that cabinet makers in Jersey and Guernsey were happy to take influences from both of these countries whilst developing and maintaining some distinct styles and features of their own.

Some of those features are very much present on this particular serpentine chest of drawers, not least the chestnut drawer linings and the inlaid canted corners which are both very distinctive channel island features. It is also worth noting that the timbers used for construction of channel island pieces is very often at the top end of the attractiveness scale, this is in part believed to be down to the cabinet makers in the channel islands being given first pick of timbers when the boats from the americas would stop off en route to England.

As expected this particular chest of drawers is lovely quality, constructed from excellent timbers and a nice sweet size, big enough to be very functional, whilst not being so large that it overpowers a space or room.

The feet are a very interesting feature as well, very much original and incredibly elegant. They are a design which we have not specifically seen before and we believe that they could well be unique.

As with all items which we offer for sale this chest of drawers has been inspected in our workshops, by our highly skilled, trained antique furniture restorers, to ensure that it is in its best possible condition before being offered for sale. It has also received a natural wax polish, meaning it is certainly ready for immediate placement within the home after purchase.
