An Extremely Rare And Very Attractive Late 18th Century Georgian Anglo Indian Octagonal Padouk Wood Cellarette, Or Wine Cooler, Having Profuse Brass Banded Decoration And Original Brass Carrying Handles, Below Hinged Lid Enclosing Storage Cavity, Raised On Its Original Stand With Four Elegant Fluted Cabriole Legs.

This is a really interesting piece of furniture, the like of which we have not come across before. Clearly based on the typical late 18th century english cellarette on stand which was nearly always constructed from fine quality mahogany timbers, this particular example is actually constructed using padouk wood and has an unusual design to the brass banded decoration and construction which makes it almost certain to have originated from India.

Much furniture was made for European citizens during their presence in colonial India throughout the 18th and 19th centuries. Confusingly this falls into a number of different categories, with a number of different names and sometimes more than one name being used to descrive exactly the same thing. However the phrase Anglo-Indian is widely regarded as anything which was made for the British market and stylistically these items will usually be constructed in a classical English design, but often with a twist and will more often than not also be constructed using the native woods of India, such as teak, camphor wood and padouk.

Cellarettes, often referred to as Wine Coolers, first started appearing as early as the 15 century in Europe. However they became far more widely used throughout the 18th and 19th centuries.

Their use was for storage of alcoholic beverages and more often than not they would have a substantial lock and key to ensure the valuable beverages did not go walkabouts in the wrong hands.

As with all items which we offer for sale, our highly skilled, trained traditional antique furniture restorers have ensured that this cellarette is in its best possible condition before we presented it for sale and it has also received a natural wax polish, so it is ready for immediate placement within the home.
