18th Century Georgian Mahogany Silver Table (England, circa 1765)
18th Century Georgian Mahogany Silver Table (England, circa 1765)
A Very Good Quality And Extremely Attractive 18th Century, Early George III Chippendale Period Mahogany Silver Table, Or Centre Table, Having Superbly Figured Shaped Top, With Fine Crossbanded Decoration To Border, Over Figured Shallow Frieze And Pierced Fretwork Corner Brackets, Raised On Extremely Elegant Square Legs With Fluted Decoration And Original Stacked Block Feet With Recessed Castors.
The term “Silver Table” is used because tables of this, or similar form and design, were made as central standing tables through the 18th century and beyond to be used in the dining room, or sometimes the drawing room, to house and display the usually extravagant silver ware and cutlery ready for use in dining and tea services. Silver was of course extremely precious in Georgian England and therefore it was common place for families of standing to want to show off what they owned.
They come in a few different forms, but are relatively distinctintive from a normal side table due to the fact they generally are finished on all four sides for central standing and ususally have either a raised gallery or rim, or like this one some kind of crossbanded decoration to the edge. They are also of course nearly always relatively extravagant in their detailing as they were being used to show off a families wealth.
This is a particularly nice example of a Chippendale Period Silver Table as it boasts exceptionally figured mahogany timbers and an elegant shape. It also has a lovely shallow frieze and carved corner brackets which add to the overall elegant lines of the piece. Another nice feature is the fluted decoration down all four legs.
In terms of condition then this table presents extremely well, having been inspected and attended to in our workshops by our highly skilled antique furniture restorers, where it received a natural wax polish. There is evidence of some historic repairs, for example at least one of the corner brackets has been repaired at some point in the tables history, but any repairs we can spot have been carried out many, many years ago and actually have simply enhanced the rich history and character of the table overall. Also please note that the castors in place are very old and have seized up/worn out, so are not operational, but the table does stand level, it just cannot be wheeled around.
