Set Of 10 Georgian Ladderback Farmhouse Kitchen Dining Chairs Early 19th Century (England, circa 1820)
Set Of 10 Georgian Ladderback Farmhouse Kitchen Dining Chairs Early 19th Century (England, circa 1820)
A Very Attractive And Extremely Good Quality, Rarely Found, Early 19th Century Georgian Ash & Elm Harlequin Set Of 10 Farmhouse Kitchen Dining Chairs, Having Attractive Ladder Backs With Turned Upright Supports Over Rushed Seats, Raised On Elegant Bulbous Turned Legs United By Stretchers.
Most designs of ladderback, or spindleback, chairs produced during the 18th and 19th centuries can generally be attributed to a particular region of the United Kingdom, owing to the individual design quirks and construction methods employed by local craftsmen. These chairs are no different, the particular combination of bold turned legs and shaped ladderbacks typically being associated with the West of the country and Wales.
Another aspect which we particularly like about this set is that they are genuinely Georgian and early 19th century examples, meaning they possess real character, colour, patina and signs of honest use, unlike many later 19th or early 20th century examples regularly encountered on the market today. Naturally this has resulted in the expected minor nicks, marks, scrapes and general signs of age, although nothing which detracts from either the appearance or structural integrity of the chairs.
Overall the chairs are in excellent functional condition and are ready to be placed immediately around a dining table and put straight into use. The rush seats are all in good order and have clearly been re-rushed at various stages during their lives, relatively recently, meaning they should not require any attention for quite some time.
As is almost always the case with English country chairs, this is a harlequin, or matched, set and therefore there are minor variations in both design and dimensions from one chair to another. In truth however they match remarkably well in comparison to many similar sets we have encountered previously. We have ensured that the range of measurements is quoted accurately should this be important to prospective purchasers.
As with all items which we offer for sale, the chairs have been attended to in our workshops by our trained traditional antique furniture restorers to ensure they are presented in the best possible condition before being offered for sale, including being finished with a lovely natural wax polish.
Perfect for either a rustic farmhouse kitchen or a more formal townhouse interior, these chairs possess tremendous versatility whilst also representing excellent value for money.
