Regency 19th Century English Pair of Desk Armchairs (England, circa 1820)
Regency 19th Century English Pair of Desk Armchairs (England, circa 1820)
A very attractive and extremely unusual pair of Regency period
Ebonized, parcel gilded and brass armchairs, with minor
Differences to design, construction and size, having solid brass
Pierced backs with elegant parcel gilded decoration over caned
Seats raised on elegant sabre legs
(These incredible chairs are offered very much in a country house condition,
which means they are perfectly functional but have not been restored
back to perfect condition. The main reason for this is that they have aged
so gracefully it seems a shame to make them shiny and glitzy and lose those
years of gentle ageing. From a construction point of view they are sound and
solid and perfectly fit to sit on and use day to day etc. There is one parcel gilded
partake missing from around the edge of the seat and a lot of the parcel gilding
is quite worn. There is also a few repairs to the incredibly unusual solid brass
backs, although these are old repairs and they have left the backs perfectly sound.
There are also some minor differences to the chairs, which include a very slight
difference in the carved detailing, a slightly different depth of splay to the sabre legs
and a very slight difference in overall height and depth. We will probably never know
for certain the reason for these differences but we believe it is most likely that they
produced from the same workshop a couple of years apart, possibly even by a different
craftsman, hence the slight differences in detail.
Either way they are a quite spectacular pair or chairs, with incredible elegance to their
design – There is many a different space around the home and office which these could
be used in and they would certainly brighten up any room which they are placed in.),
