Rare Regency Rosewood & Brass Whatnot (England, circa 1835)
An Exceptionally Fine Quality And Extremely Rare 19th Century Late Regency Period Rosewood And Brass Mounted Whatnot, Or Etagere, Of Baluster Form, Having Fine Ormolu Gallery To Top Tier, Two Middle Tiers With Galleried Edge And Further Bottom Tier Over Drawer, The Sides With Elegant Swept Supports And Lyre Design Brass Rods Headed By Pine Cone Finial Decoration, The Drawer With Original Brass Handle Over Elegant Swept Legs With Original Brass Paw Castors.
This is a quite incredible whatnot, significantly better in terms of quality, design and elegance than just about any other which we have ever seen. It has clearly been produced in one of the best Regency cabinet making workshops, using only the very best materials and skills.
From a practical perspective it has many uses indeed, far too many to list here and an added feature is that is designed to look just as happy against a wall, or in the middle of the room.
For the only whatnot we have ever seen, or found, of similar design you can view Christies New York Important English Furniture Sale (9488), which took place on 19th October 2000. Lot 249 very closely relates to this particular article. Link below
