Rare Early 18th Century Walnut Oval Stool, George I Period (England, circa 1720)
Rare Early 18th Century Walnut Oval Stool, George I Period (England, circa 1720)
A Rare And Very Good Quality Early 18th Century George I Period Walnut And Upholstered Oval Stool, The Recently Upholstered Seat Raised On Four Very Elegant Cabriole Legs With Original Turned Pad Feet.
Once retailed by the highly respected historic firm “Phillips Of Hitchin Ltd”.
Dating from the early part of the 18th century, this is a particularly charming and relatively unusual example, with the oval form being considered much rarer than the more conventional rectangular stools of the period.
Constructed from good quality walnut throughout, the elegant cabriole legs retain a lovely rich colour and surface, with the original turned pad feet being a particularly pleasing feature. There are of course various old marks, knocks, repairs and imperfections commensurate with over 300 years of age and use, all of which blend comfortably into the overall appearance of the piece.
The seat has recently been reupholstered in a good quality neutral fabric, making it ready for immediate use, whilst its useful proportions allow it to work equally well as an occasional stool, dressing stool, or positioned in front of a chair or fireside.
Of additional interest is its provenance, having at one time been retailed by Phillips of Hitchin Ltd, one of the best known and most respected English antique furniture dealers of the 20th century.
As with all items which we offer for sale this stool has been inspected and attended to in our workshops by our trained antique furniture restorers, before being offered for sale ready to place straight into the home.
