Pair Of Georgian Mahogany 18th Century Bedside Night Tables (England, circa 1760)

SOLD

A Wonderful Quality And Extremely Close Matched Pair Of 18th Century, George III Period, Mahogany Bedside Night Tables, Or Tray Top Commodes, Having Well Figured Gallery Tops With Pierced Decoration And Handles, Over Unusual Shallow Drawer To Frieze And Two Cupboard Doors, With Converted Pull Out Drawer Below And Elegantly Shaped Frieze, Raised On Square Chamfered Legs.

These are a really good example of the stereotypical Georgian bedside night table. At some point in their history they have been matched together into a pair, which is extremely common due to a relentless demand over many years for matching tables either side of a bed, in combination to the relative scarcity and therefore extremely high price of any true pairs which can occasionally be found on the market.

The differences are relatively minor, with just some ever so slightly different mouldings in places, plus one being an inch wider and quarter of an inch shorter than the other the only real difference to speak of, alongside a slight difference in the height of the doors, due to the overall height difference. Frankly, it takes extremely close inspection, with them side by side and back to back to notice the differences at all, so either side of a bed or similar there is absolutely no way one would be able to see any differences.

It is indeed quite possible that they were made in the same workshop originally. The shallow frieze drawer is an extremely uncommon feature and they are both very well figured, retaining a good rich colour. The overall quality of the tables is excellent and they are certainly still extremely fit for purpose.

The design continues to prove an extremely popular option for bedside tables due to its relative sturdiness, especially when compared to various other bedside options, the storage its able to offer and the tray type tops which make it much less likely items perched on the top will get knocked over.

As with all items we offer for sale this Pair Of Bedside Tables have been inspected and attended to in our workshops by our highly skilled, specialist trained, antique furniture restorers and received a natural wax polish before being offered for sale to ensure that they are in excellent condition and ready for immediate placement within the home.
