Mid-19th Century Camphor Wood Military Campaign Chest of Drawers (England, circa 1840)
Mid-19th Century Camphor Wood Military Campaign Chest of Drawers (England, circa 1840)
A superb quality mid-19th century camphor wood military campaign chest having well figured top over two short and three long drawers with ebonized decoration & original flush fitting brass handles raised on original turned feet with brass bound decoration to edges throughout (Military campaign chests as the name suggests were originally made for easy transportation around the battlefield. A few features specific to this purpose are the two part construction for ease of movement, the flush fitted brass handles and brass bound decoration designed to ensure there are as few bits “poking out” that which are likely to snagged during movement. Example is constructed from camphor wood which is many people regard as the best quality of the woods used to construct these type of chests from with the added bonus which camphor wood offers of a strong but very pleasant aroma inside the drawers which is very much intended to keep the moths, insects and bugs away.)
