Matched Pair Of Georgian Mahogany Bedside Night Tables (England, circa 1770)
Matched Pair Of Georgian Mahogany Bedside Night Tables (England, circa 1770)
A Matched Pair Of Very Similar Late 18th Century George III Period Mahogany Bedside Night Tables, Or Tray Top Commodes, Having Well Figured Tops With Elegant Shaped Galleries And Pierced Handles, Over Pairs Of Cupboard Doors, Enclosing Storage Cavities And Converted Pull Out Drawers With Replacement Brass Handles, Raised On Square Chamfered Legs.
These are great examples of the much sought after Georgian bedside night table, which at some point in their history have been placed together due to their many similarities in both design and size, something which is extremely common due to a relentless demand over many years for matching, or similar tables either side of a bed in combination to the relative scarcity and therefore extremely high price of any true pairs which can be found on the market at any given time.
Happily, despite their being noticable differences when placed alonside each other, there is nothing which really stands out when placed either side of a bed or similar. The most obvious differences upon close inspection is the small difference in size, particularly depth, slightly different shaping to some of the moulded decoration and differences in the shaping of the gallery and pierced handles.
It is actually possible that they were made in the same workshop originally due to the similarities of their construction. The cupboard doors offer a solidity and function which some more delicate designs don’t have and they retain a good colour and patina.
This particular design continues to prove an extremely popular option for bedside tables due to the relative sturdiness, especially when compared to various other bedside options, the storage they are able to offer and the tray type tops which make it much less likely items perched on the top will get knocked over.
As with all items which we offer for sale these bedside tables have been inspected in our workshops by our highly skilled, trained traditional antique furniture restorers and received a natural wax polish before being offered for sale, ensuring that they are ready to be placed immediately into the home.
