Georgian Mahogany Whatnot (England, circa 1810)

SOLD

A Fine Quality, 18th Century, George III Period Mahogany Whatnot Of Charming Small Proportion, Having Three Well Figured Rectagular Tiers, United By Turned Upright Supports And One Frieze Drawer, Raised On Extremely Elegant Tall Turned Legs Retaining Original Brass Castors.

The term whatnot, as you may be able to work out from the name, is an item of furniture which was made for the storage and display of no particular or specific item or genre, rather its something that could be used for just about anything.

Whatnots vary hugely in size, shape, quality, design etc and have pretty much been a staple of the english furniture making throughout the centuries due to the obvious practicalities of them.

Indeed the word Étagère, derived from the French word for a set of open freestanding shelves and the English term of Whatno are two phrases which are pretty much always interchangeable these days, although more often than not you will find that the term Whatnot is used to describe the larger variations, whereas Étagère will be used to describe this smaller variants.

This particular whatnot is fabulous quality, constructed from good quality mahogany timbers and remains in excellent condition, retaining a nice colour and patina. The proportions are compact which add to the overall elegance of the piece, but the real showstopper is the high, turned legs which stand incredibly proud and give the piece real presence.

As with all items which we offer for sale this whatnot has been attended to in our workshops, by our traditional antique furniture restorers and received a natural wax polish, to ensure it is ready to be placed straight into the home before being offered for sale.
