Fine Regency English Amboyna Centre Table (England, circa 1820)
Fine Regency English Amboyna Centre Table (England, circa 1820)
A delightful and very fine quality English regency period amboyna wood centre table having superbly figured tilting circular top with inlaid anthemion decoration to border raised on triangulated central support terminating on elegant triform base with original bronze paw castors (This stunning table is a wonderful example of the skills and workmanship on show in London around the Regency period. Although we cannot attribute it to a particular maker, or workshop, there was certainly only 4 or 5 cabinet making workshops of the time capable of producing such excellent work and of course of affording the raw materials. Amboyna is indigenous mainly to south East Asia and the Pacific islands and not regularly found in English furniture due to the exorbitant costs of sourcing it around the time. It is also however a beautifully decorative wood which nearly always retains a rich colour and is high figuring. This table stands with incredible elegance and grace and would no doubt be a highlight in any room, of any home).
