English Regency Mahogany Antique Canterbury (England, circa 1820)
English Regency Mahogany Antique Canterbury (England, circa 1820)
A Very Unusual And Good Quality Regency Period Mahogany Boat
Shaped Canterbury Having Silhoutte Upright Supports To Dividers
Above One Frieze Drawer Raised On Elegant Turned Legs
(Legend has it that canterburies are named such as the first object of
this design was commissioned by the Archbishop of Canterbury in the
late 18th century. Although the original format is believed to have had
dividers in both directions with the purpose of holding cutlery for the
dining room, things soon progressed and they started being used mainly
for sheet music storage. These days of course a Canterbury makes the
perfect vehicle for storing newspapers and magazines in. This particularly
nice example is excellent quality and has real elegance to it which is aided
by the most unusual silhouette type supports front and back. It also stands
high and proud on its original brass castors and elegant turned legs.)
