English 19th Century William IV Satinwood & Pietra Dura Marble-Top Centre Table (England, circa 1835)
An extremely unusual William IV period satinwood circular centre table
having attractive Pietra Dura marble chess board top raised on well
figured tripartite central column with scrolling supports and carved
decoration terminating on plateau base with carved claw and ball feet.
(This fine quality centre table is late regency in date and would no doubt
have been very much a status symbol in the entrance hall, or another well
used room of a wealthy families home. There is significant depth to the
carving and the satinwood veneers are of very high grade. The top consists
of a slate bed onto which a whole host of specimen marble pieces have been
meticulously veneered on (this is what the term pieta dura means) – The time
and skill that have gone into completing this entire process by hand are
almost unimaginable in modern times. The table remains in excellent
condition with just a few small old repairs to both the woodwork and marble.)
circa 1835
Measures: Height – 28in
Diameter – 34in.
