English 19th Century Walnut Duet Stool (England, circa 1860)
English 19th Century Walnut Duet Stool (England, circa 1860)
A good quality mid-19th century walnut duet stool having drop in seat to elegant carved and moulded frame raised on elegant cabriole legs
(A typical design of stool from the mid 19th century which were often produced in mahogany, walnut and rosewood, they titled duet stools due to their long and thin design which in principle allowed them to be used for two people to sit alongside each other whilst performing duets. Of course in reality not every stool of these proportions was made for that purpose and many of the other original purposes would have been just the same as they would be today, including under a window, at the bottom of a bed, in the middle of the room as a coffee table and various others. This particular example is excellent quality with a lovely depth to the carving. Finally the removable drop in seat is a useful feature to anybody looking to change the fabric, saving a little bit of money in upholstery costs.)
